Hiro Adachi is a Japanese student studying in Britain.
After breaking up with his girlfriend Akiko, he goes
to Berlin by train alone on holiday. Whilst travelling,
he and another man, who later introduces himself
as a Swedish businessman called Erik Bjornson,
mistakenly pick up each other’s mobile phone. Hiro
reads two strange messages on the man’s phone that
make him suspect that the unpleasant-looking man,
whom he nicknames ‘the Shark’, might be planning
to kill somebody at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin. As they
leave the station, the man tries to kill Hiro by pushing
him under a train. Hiro goes to the police, but they
do not believe his story. He feels stupid but decides
to do something about things himself. He goes to the
Brandenburg Gate at 13.00 the next day – the time
for a proposed meeting that he had read about on the
Shark’s phone – to try and find out what’s going on.
Instead, he is picked up by two men who say they are
police and is taken to a flat. He realises that they are
the Shark’s colleagues, but he manages to escape. He
later decides to be brave and go to the Hotel Adlon to
tell the manager about the plan to kill someone in
Room 319 that evening, but the manager does not
believe him either. He is asked to leave the hotel but
manages to get back in through the underground car
park and the kitchens. When he gets to the third floor,
he meets Franz Schubert from Room 320. He is the
bodyguard of the man in Room 319. He gets Hiro to
tell him the story about the planned murder, and Hiro
is relieved when Schubert believes his story. Schubert
tells Hiro that the man in Room 319 is someone very
important and that he must try to move him to another
room. Schubert then leaves the room, telling Hiro to
call him on his mobile the moment he sees the Shark.
A hotel boy soon arrives and knocks at the door. When
Hiro opens it, however, the boy is shot dead by the
Shark, who then immediately enters the room and says
he’s going to kill Hiro. He says he will make it a painful
death unless he tells him what he has told Schubert.
While answering the Shark’s questions, Hiro manages
to telephone Schubert and in a few moments there is
an explosion and Schubert bursts in, shoots the Shark
and saves Hiro. The next day Schubert takes Hiro for an
expensive lunch and gives him 5,000 euros from the man
in Room 319 as a thank-you present. He also gives him
advice about how to restart his relationship with Akiko.
